When the tool becomes a hero, the craftsman becomes a ghost.

“You used to spend three hours on the key light,” the assistant said. “Now you don’t.”

Otávio did not look up. He looked at the camera. He checked the battery. He did not check the light. The light was flat. The light was grey. The room was too dark for a clean shot.

“The software will fix it,” Otávio said.

“The software does not know where the light should be,” the assistant said.

“The software knows enough,” Otávio said.

The Drift of Precision

We are a species that loves a safety net. We love the feeling of being rescued. We love the hero who arrives at the last minute to save the day.

He is right. He does not need it. The world does not demand it. The world only demands the 4K image. The world only demands the sharp edge. The tool provides the edge. The tool provides the clarity. The tool is free. The tool is fast.

Why would a man carry a heavy light stand up three flights of stairs when a browser can do the work for him? There is no logical reason to do the hard work. There is only a moral reason. There is only the reason of the craft. But the craft is a ghost. You cannot eat the craft. You cannot pay rent with the craft. You pay rent with the file.

Pearl J.P. says that when we stop doing the hard work, we lose the ability to understand why things break. We forget the physics of the problem. We only know the solution. We become a society of button-pressers.

The deadline rescue is a beautiful thing. It is a miracle of technology. It allows a small business to look like a big business. It allows a student to look like a pro. It allows a hungry man to feel full for a minute. But the rescue has a price. The price is the standard. The standard is slipping. It is slipping because we let it slip. We let it slip because we have a net.

He knows he has a hero in his pocket. He knows he can go home and click a button. He knows he will be saved. The rescue is the hero of the story. But the hero is the one who took the man’s job. The hero is the one who made the man obsolete.

We praise the tool. We thank the tool. We use the tool. And slowly, we disappear into the tool.

The safety net became a hammock that the craft could no longer support.

We must decide if we want to be rescued. We must decide if we want to be good. Sometimes, those are not the same thing. Sometimes, the rescue is the end of the man. Pearl J.P. knows this. Otávio knows this. I know this.

But I still want the shortcut. I still want the rescue. We all do. It is human to want the net. It is human to want to lie in the hammock. The sun is going down. The room is getting dark. I could turn on a light. Or I could just fix it later.

I think I will fix it later. Everything can be fixed later. That is the promise. That is the lie. That is the future.
